Gorgeous girl Elsie looks like butter wouldn’t melt but has developed a habit of high pitched barking which is driving her humans crazy!

The barking only comes when she is super excited which makes things more frustrating as this usually means getting ready to leave the house 🙈

Today we discussed some foundation exercises to help Elsie understand that quiet brings the fun. Elsie did so well and was able to put on her lead near the front door quietly for the first time in forever 🥰

I love baking my own training treats because it means I know exactly what’s in them. Having a fussy dog, I can also experiment with recipes to find the really high value flavours.

Today we’ve got a goat mince, spinach, carrot and apple oaty biscuit with added chia seeds.

Here we are working on each dog holding their place cue and taking it in turns to be called to work. Training your dog in a multi dog household can have its own share of difficulties, most notably trying to stop the other dogs from trying to join in on training sessions 😂🙈

We are using Susan Garrett’s method of teaching each dog to wait their turn, and building value in just hanging out on their ‘place’.

In multi-dog households it’s so important to give each dog their own one on one time for training and bonding. Spending every minute with each other can often result in many varied behaviour issues which then become difficult to manage when both dogs are struggling in different ways.

Winston had a puppy visit today to work out why he didn’t want to go for walks. Well he stepped out of the front door and trotted off with us without a care in the world 😂🙈

Not to worry though! We went for a wander and talked about all things puppy raising from how to handle if Winston doesn’t want to walk again, puppy socialisation and preventing separation anxiety.

I can’t wait to see more of Winston as he grows and navigates the big wide world!

Sadly very often we end up trying to teach our dogs what drop means when it’s too late and they have something they shouldn’t have. This can lead to a feeling of urgency and very quickly turn into us shouting “drop” at our dogs and wrestling the illegal item from them. This can then develop resource guarding behaviour as your dog learns to protect valuable items.

Plan a training session for teaching your dog a drop cue with a fun game of tug! It will build positive association with the cue and its an excuse to play with your dog 🥰

Dogs have a multitude of different ways of communicating how they are feeling at any given time. Our job as their guardians is to learn how to read their language so we can keep them feeling safe and confident.

Body language is a great canine communication tool and the little behaviours that our dogs do when they are worried or uncomfortable can be labelled as ‘calming signals’. The small things our dogs do when they aren’t feeling 100%. When I’m stressed I might bite my nails. Other people may adjust their clothing or tap their feet. Like people, all our dogs are different, but there are some classic signs that our dogs may not be as comfortable as we think they are in certain situations.

One of these example behaviours alone won’t necessarily mean there is a problem, and body language is a whole picture of different movements and signals, but this graphic gives a little insight into some of the things a dog may “say” when they aren’t feeling it.

Just because your dog isn’t reacting by barking and growling doesn’t necessarily mean they are okay.
